The VAT return

A VAT return you can explain box by box

Your VAT return is where mistakes in your books become a real problem. Kept works out the return from what is in your books, shows where each figure came from, and leaves the filing to a person.

01

Worked out, not typed in

Status: Available now

When you open the return for a period, Kept fills in every box of the VAT 201 (the UAE VAT return form) from what is in your books for that period. Nobody types into the return itself. If a figure is wrong, you fix it in your books with a new entry, and Kept works out the return again. The rates and rules come from Kept's published settings, which carry dates. So a return for a past period uses the rules that applied then, not today's.

02

See what is behind every box

Status: Available now

Each box opens to show what is behind it: sales invoices, supplier bills in your books, reverse-charge entries and credit notes. You can go from a box to a document and back without leaving the return. So you can check how the return was worked out against your books, instead of relying on a separate spreadsheet typed by hand.

03

Check it agrees with your books before you file

Status: Available now

Before you file, Kept compares the return with the VAT accounts in your books and shows any difference between them. A difference is something to explain, never something to type over. Most differences turn out to be an entry in the wrong period or an entry with the wrong VAT treatment. Both are fixed in your books, not in the return.

04

A person files it

Status: Available now

Kept does not file the return with the FTA (the Federal Tax Authority) and does not act for you. A person signs in to the FTA's own portal and submits it before the filing deadline for your period. When you mark the return as filed in Kept, its figures are sealed with a digital fingerprint (a hash). Later changes to your books cannot quietly change that saved copy.

05

Before you register for VAT

Status: Available now

If your business is not registered for VAT yet, Kept keeps your books as normal. Whether and when to register, including when you reach the registration threshold, is your decision or your adviser's. Kept does not make that decision, and this site does not show a figure for the threshold. Kept takes such figures from its current settings.

06

What Kept will not do

Status: Available now

Kept will not let anyone edit a filed return, change an entry inside a filed period, or hide a correction. A mistake found after filing is fixed in a later period, in plain sight, and the original stays in place. That is slower than typing over a number, and it is why your books hold up when someone checks them.

Stop typing in receipts. Start checking them.

Kept is launching soon in the UAE. Leave your name and email and we will write to you before it opens.
